From Exclusion To Empowerment: A New Approach For Young People At Risk of Permanent School Exclusion

Understanding The School Exclusion Crisis

In the academic year 2023-2024, the number of permanent exclusions in England is reported to have reached a concerning 6,250 among children and young people aged 11-18.

This figure, though slightly higher than in previous years, is part of a worrying trend that has been steadily growing over time.

Each exclusion represents a young life at risk of being pushed further away from education and closer to the margins of society.

The data reveals the reasons behind these exclusions are varied but alarmingly consistent. Persistent disruptive behaviour accounts for nearly half of all exclusions, followed closely by physical assaults against other students, verbal abuse and threatening behaviour towards adults. Drug and alcohol-related incidents and, in some cases, physical assaults against adults also contribute significantly to the exclusion statistics.

These actions often signal deep-rooted challenges in a young person’s life – challenges that are not being adequately addressed within the school environment.

What These Statistics Mean For Today’s Young People

These statistics are more than just a reflection of individual failings. They highlight systemic issues within our educational and social structures.

The link between school exclusion and subsequent involvement in crime is well-documented. A significant number of young people who find themselves in the criminal justice system have a history of school exclusion.

Over half of those imprisoned by age 24 had their first encounter with the law before turning 16, often soon after being excluded from school. This correlation is particularly strong among vulnerable students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are at a higher risk of being drawn into criminal activities post-exclusion.

For parents, the impact of a child’s exclusion is profound. The stress of finding alternative educational arrangements, tied together with the emotional toll that the process takes, can be overwhelming.

Many parents feel isolated, frustrated and helpless as they try to support their child in a system that perhaps often feels more focused on sanctions and following processes, rather than on providing solutions.

Addressing The Root Causes

Addressing the issue of school exclusions requires a multi-agency approach that goes beyond punitive measures, where each member of the desired wraparound support understands and commits fully to their role and understands the positive impact they can have on a young life.

It’s essential to understand the underlying causes of disruptive behaviour – whether stemming from unmet emotional needs, undiagnosed special educational needs, trauma, domestic violence, challenges at home, poor mental health – to name a few.

Schools and parents must work together to create an environment where young people feel supported, understood and motivated to engage positively with their education.

Open communication is key. Parents should feel empowered to discuss their child’s needs with school staff and advocate for interventions that focus on support rather than exclusion. Schools, in turn, should be equipped with the resources and training necessary to identify at-risk students early and provide targeted support that addresses the root causes of their behaviour.

A Resilience & Mindset Approach

In my work as a Resilience & Mindset Life Coach, and as the Strategic Safeguarding Manager in a Pupil Referral Unit, I’ve seen first hand how early intervention can turn a young person’s life around.

It’s about more than just addressing the symptoms of challenging behaviour. It’s about helping young people understand their potential, develop a growth mindset and find practical solutions to the challenges they face.

By focusing on their strengths and providing them with the tools they need to make better choices, we can help them see the value in education and the possibilities for their future.

How My Intervention Can Help Your Child

To support young people at risk of permanent exclusion, I offer a two-session intervention designed to challenge and inspire them. These one-to-one sessions are a safe space for your child to explore the impact of their current choices and understand the importance of a growth mindset.

We dive deep into key areas of their lives, including school, peer groups and future ambitions, helping them to identify strengths and develop strategies to overcome obstacles.

During these sessions, your child will create a personalised plan of action, setting them on a path towards more positive choices. They’ll also learn practical strategies to manage challenges, empowering them to navigate the complexities of school life with greater confidence and resilience. Further one-to-one sessions are also available as desired.

If your child is regularly being suspended, is at risk of permanent exclusion or is struggling to see the value of education, this intervention could be the turning point they need.

Delivered either face-to-face (depending on location) or virtually, these sessions are designed to meet your child wherever they are on their journey and support them in making lasting, positive changes for a brighter, more ambitious future.
