When You're Child
Is Hurting...
And The System
Says Wait.

When your child is hurting and the system says wait, what do you do?
Emma and Mark were at breaking point. Their teenage son had begun self-harming and withdrawing from family life. His low mood was escalating, but he didn’t quite meet the thresholds for urgent intervention. They were placed on a waiting list, told to monitor and manage in the meantime, but that felt like doing nothing, and their fear was growing.
They reached out to me for support and attended my online session Responding To Mental Health In Teenagers. For the first time, they were given real tools, not just reassurance. We explored ways to create safety at home, risk assessing, how to open up non-judgemental conversations and how to support their son emotionally without overwhelming him.
At the same time, I worked directly with their son through one-to-one coaching. He responded well to coaching, which provided him a confidential space free from pressure and full of understanding. The shift wasn’t dramatic overnight, but it was powerful. The family began communicating again. Trust started to rebuild. Emma and Mark no longer felt helpless, and their son began to re-engage with school, his routine and most importantly, with them.
This wasn’t just about helping a young person. It was about empowering a family. When support systems delay, parents need tools they can use today. This family used every single one to move forward together.
